SPORTS INJURIES
Why would meniscus surgery be needed?
Meniscus surgery aims to repair torn cartilage tissue in the knee. The meniscus is a cartilaginous structure found in the knee joint that assists with smooth movement between bones. This cartilage also affects the strength of the knee too and serves as a shock absorber. Additionally, the meniscus assists with stability and load-bearing strength of the knee as well.
The meniscus can tear as a result of knee trauma experienced during strenuous sporting activities or accidents. If you have a meniscus tear, you may experience:
- Stiffness or pain in the knee
- Swelling
- Grinding sensation between bones in the knee
- Inability to put weight on knee
- Locking or catching feeling in knee
How is it done?
Dr Stander performs meniscus surgery arthroscopically using minimally invasive incisions and small surgical tools. Using an arthroscope featuring a tiny camera, Dr Stander will first examine the tear in the meniscus before deciding whether a repair or partial removal of the cartilage is required. In severe cases, complete removal of the meniscus may be needed.
During the procedure, Dr Stander will make small incisions in the knee to access the meniscus. Depending on the severity of the tear, he will then either stitch the meniscus tear or remove the damaged tissue. General or spinal anaesthetic may be used during this time. Once the meniscus has been repaired or removed, the wounds will be stitched closed. In most cases, meniscus surgery is a same-day procedure and patients will be able to go home a few hours after surgery.
What can be expected after surgery?
Shortly after meniscus surgery, you will be able to return home with pain relievers to manage discomfort. Dr Stander will also advise you on how to take care of your wounds to ensure that you make a full recovery. You may need to keep your leg elevated, wear a knee brace and walk with crutches while your meniscus heals. Dr Stander will also outline the physical activities you should avoid during the healing process, which may include driving and lifting heavy objects. A specialised physical therapy routine will, however, help you regain full strength in your knee. During a follow-up appointment, your stitches will be removed. Full recovery from meniscus repair surgery is expected about three months after the procedure is performed. If part of the meniscus was removed rather than stitched closed, however, full recovery can be expected within several weeks.
